Check if Your Device is Unlocked

Learn how to verify if your iPhone or Android device is unlocked and what that means for using eSIM or switching carriers.

iPhone

Your iPhone might be locked to your carrier. Unlocking your iPhone means that you can use it with different carriers, including eSIM providers.

To check if your iPhone is unlocked:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General > About.
  3. Scroll to Carrier Lock.
  4. If you see "No SIM restrictions", your iPhone is unlocked.

If your iPhone is carrier-locked, contact your carrier to request unlocking. Apple cannot unlock your iPhone.

Samsung

Samsung phones can also be carrier-locked. To check if your Samsung phone is unlocked:

  1. Insert a SIM card from a different carrier.
  2. Restart your phone and try to make a call or use mobile data.
  3. If it works, the device is likely unlocked. If you see a "SIM network unlock PIN" prompt, it is locked.

You can also go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators and search for available networks. Multiple options suggest your phone is unlocked.

Other Android Phones

Steps may vary depending on brand (e.g., Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi), but you can generally check as follows:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Connections, Network & internet, or similar.
  3. Go to Mobile network.
  4. Tap Choose network or Automatically select network.
  5. If multiple networks are listed, your phone is likely unlocked. If only one appears, it's probably locked.

For All Other Devices

If you're using a device not listed above (e.g., tablets, laptops, or region-specific brands), the best way to check if it’s unlocked is:

  1. Insert a SIM card from a different carrier.
  2. Restart the device.
  3. Attempt to use data or make a call (if supported).
  4. If the device prompts for an unlock code or fails to connect, it is likely locked.

For confirmation or unlocking, contact the carrier that originally sold or activated the device.
